Prof. dr. Mariek Vanden Abeele
Mariek Vanden Abeele is Associate Professor in Digitale Cultuur aan de Faculteit Politieke en Sociale Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Gent. Mariek behaalde haar doctoraat in Communicatiewetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Leuven in 2012 en begon in datzelfde jaar te werken als Assistent-Professor aan de School voor Menswetenschappen en Digitale Wetenschappen van de Universiteit van Tilburg. In 2015 werkte Mariek als doctoraal assistent bij imec-mict-UGent, waarna ze in 2016 terugkeerde naar de Universiteit van Tilburg. In 2018 benoemde de Universiteit van Tilburg Mariek tot Associate Professor en kende haar ook een Philip Eijlander Diversity (PED) fellowship toe om haar prestaties te erkennen. Vanaf februari 2021 is Mariek weer lid geworden van imec-mict-UGent als Associate Professor in Digitale Cultuur.
Mariek is de begeleider van het SBO-project en begeleidt Arturo Cocchi en Laura Lemahieu.

dr. Marijn Martens
Marijn Martens is een postdoctoraal onderzoeker bij de imec-onderzoeksgroep voor Media, Innovatie en Communicatietechnologieën (imec-mict-UGent). Hij behaalde een bachelor's degree in Secundair Onderwijs: Natuurkunde - Wiskunde (Artevelde Hogeschool, 2015), een master's degree in Communicatiewetenschappen met een specialisatie in Nieuwe Media en Samenleving (Universiteit Gent, 2017), en een doctoraat in Communicatiewetenschappen (Universiteit Gent, 2023) over de perceptie en evaluatie van algoritmische systemen die helpen bij beslissingen vanuit het standpunt van leken.
Marijn is de coördinator van het SBO project.

Prof. dr. Bram De Wever
Bram De Wever is associate professor aan de Afdeling Onderwijskunde, Faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen, Universiteit Gent, België. Hij is hoofd van de onderzoeksgroep TECOLAB. Voor dit specifieke SBO-voorstel brengt Bram zijn ervaring met het ontwerpen, implementeren en evalueren van interventies in authentieke onderwijsomgevingen in. Zijn onderzoeksinteresses omvatten het gebruik van technologie in onderwijsomgevingen, waarbij hij zich heeft gericht op online en blended leren in het secundair, hoger en volwassenenonderwijs.

Prof. dr. Ernst Koster
Ernst Koster is hoogleraar aan de afdeling Experimentele-Klinische en Gezondheidspsychologie van de Universiteit Gent. Hij heeft een onderzoeksprofessorpositie gekregen van het bijzondere onderzoeksfonds van de Universiteit Gent (2019-2025). Hij heeft het PANlab mede-opgericht. Dit laboratorium is internationaal erkend als een expertisecentrum voor cognitieve (neuro)wetenschap van affectieve stoornissen zoals depressie en angst. De onderzoeksinteresses van Ernst Koster zijn cognitieve kwetsbaarheidsfactoren voor depressie en angst. In dit verband heeft hij de effecten van het gebruik van sociale media en problematisch gamen als risicofactoren bestudeerd in de afgelopen jaren.

Prof. dr. Lieven De Marez
Lieven De Marez is professor 'Media, Technologie & Innovatie' en 'Onderzoek naar gebruikersgerichte innovatie' aan de afdeling Communicatiewetenschappen aan de Universiteit Gent. Hij is hoofd van de multidisciplinaire onderzoeksgroep voor Media, Innovatie & Communicatietechnologieën (mict), gelieerd aan imec, het toonaangevende R&D- en innovatiecentrum op het gebied van nano-elektronica en digitale technologieën. Binnen imec is Lieven de grondlegger van de digimeter en methodologische innovator binnen het Innovation Services Team van imec.
Prof. dr. Tom de Leyn
Tom De Leyn is een docent (tenure track) binnen communicatiewetenschappen aan de School voor Sociale Wetenschappen (UHasselt) en geaffilieerde onderzoeker aan de onderzoeksgroep voor Media, Innovatie en Communicatietechnologieën (imec-mict-UGent). Hij behaalde een bachelor in psychologie (KUL), een master in antropologie (KUL) en een doctoraat in communicatiewetenschappen (UGent) Tom voert onderzoek naar digitale jeugdculturen, digitaal welzijn, mediawijsheid en privacy via kwalitatieve methoden.

Arturo Cocchi
Arturo Cocchi is een junior onderzoeker aan de Afdeling Communicatiewetenschappen van de Universiteit Gent in België. Hij werkt momenteel aan zijn doctoraat door te werken aan het Disconnect 2 Reconnect-project van de imec-mict-UGent onderzoeksgroep. Hij behaalde een BSc in Bedrijfskunde (2020) aan de Universiteit van Trento, Italië. Daar schreef hij een experimentele scriptie over creativiteit, waarbij hij de effectiviteit van het gebruik van theaterervaringen analyseerde om de soft skills van mensen te verbeteren. Vervolgens voltooide hij een Master of Research in Gedragswetenschappen (2022) aan de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen, Nederland. Het perspectief van zijn doctoraat focust op het ontwerpen van strategieën voor instellingen, scholen en bedrijven die het welzijn van de mensen die met hen interageren willen verbeteren.
Hij wordt begeleid door prof. dr. Mariek Van den Abeele, prof. dr. Bram De Wever en prof. dr. Ernst Koster.

Prof. dr. Elfi Baillien
Elfi Baillien is Hoogleraar Psychosociaal en Digitaal Welzijn op het werk aan de Faculteit Economie en Bedrijfswetenschappen van KU Leuven, binnen de onderzoeksgroep Work andOrganisation Studies. Ze behaalde in 2011 haar doctoraat in Psychologie aan KU Leuven en heeft haar Alma Mater nooit verlaten. Sinds 2014 is ze academisch directeur van de aanvullende vorming voor preventieadviseurs, specialisatie psychosociale aspecten van de arbeid (Codex Welzijn op het Werk). Ook is zij voorzitter van het segment ‘work andorganisation’ van KU Leuven’s Digital Society Institute (Digisoc). Haar onderzoeksinteressebundelt zich rond antecedenten van en interventies voor het mentaal, psychosociaal welzijn van werknemers (werkstress, conflicten, ongewenst gedrag) en de mogelijkheden maar ook uitdagingen van de toenemende digitalisering in onze werkplekken hierin. Binnen dit specifieke SBO brengt zij dan ook haar unieke perspectief van de werknemers- en werkgeverszijde in.
Elfi neemt het voortouw in het ‘werk’-verhaal binnen het SBO-project en begeleidt doctoraatsonderzoekers Lore Geldof en Alice Verlinden.

Prof. dr. Marijke Verbruggen
Marijke Verbruggen is gewoon hoogleraar en hoofd van het departement Work and Organisation Studies aan de faculteit Economie en Bedrijfswetenschappen van de KU Leuven. Marijke behaalde haar doctoraat in de toegepaste economische wetenschappen aan de KU Leuven in 2008 met een doctoraat getiteld: “De rol van loopbaanbegeleiding in het nieuwe loopbaantijdperk”. Marijke doet onderzoek naar flexibele manieren van werken, telewerk, werk-privé combinatie en loopbaanbeslissingen.

Alice Verlinden
Alice Verlinden werkt als doctoraatsonderzoeker in de onderzoeksgroep Werk- en Organisatiestudies aan de KU Leuven, Faculteit Economie en Bedrijfskunde. Sinds oktober 2022 is ze ook betrokken bij het SBO-project.
Haar onderzoek situeert zich in het domein van werk en organisaties, met de nadruk op de impact van het gebruik van ICT op het welzijn en de productiviteit van werknemers. Met behulp van zowel kwalitatieve als kwantitatieve onderzoeksmethoden onderzoekt ze hoe individuen en organisaties het gebruik van digitale technologieën kunnen reguleren door zich af te sluiten, met als doel een gezonde relatie met deze technologieën te cultiveren. Met haar achtergrond als preventieadviseur heeft ze ook een sterke interesse in preventie en interventie, wat zich weerspiegelt in haar onderzoek.
Ze wordt begeleid door Prof. Dr. Elfi Baillien en Prof. Dr. Marijke Verbruggen.
Lore Geldof
Lore Geldof heeft een master in Milieu- en Arbeidsgezondheidsmanagement. Als doctoraatstudent richt haar onderzoek zich op de impact van digitalisering op werknemers, waarbij ze specifiek kijkt naar waarom individuen ervoor kiezen (tijdelijk) geen digitale media te gebruiken, de drijvende factoren achter deze keuzes, de resulterende effecten en of dit bijdraagt aan hun welzijn. Om inzichten te verzamelen, gaat Lore in gesprek met een diverse groep werknemers en krijgt ze een diepgaand begrip van hun leven en perspectieven. Hoewel Lore zich voornamelijk richt op werknemers, heeft ze ook interesse in de balans tussen werk en privé, waardoor ze in contact komt met jonge individuen die aanvullende perspectieven op digitalisering bieden.
In het SBO-project wordt ze begeleid door Prof. Dr. Elfi Baillien en Prof. Dr. Ann DeSmet.
UAntwerpen
Prof. dr. Heidi Vandebosch
Heidi Vandebosch is professor aan het Departement Communicatiewetenschappen van de Universiteit Antwerpen. Zij doet er vooral onderzoek naar cyberpesten en andere vormen van online agressie (bv. haatspraak, seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag). Daarnaast bestudeert ze hoe communicatietechnologieën kunnen worden ingezet bij de aanpak van cyberpesten en bij gezondheidsinterventies. Heidi Vandebosch is als co-promotor betrokken bij het SBO-project, vanuit haar expertise over de impact van digitale media op sociale relaties en (fysieke en mentale) gezondheid.
Prof. dr. Karolien Poels
Karolien Poels is gewoon hoogleraar aan het departement Communicatiewetenschappen van de Universiteit Antwerpen. Haar onderzoek richt zich op de strategische communicatie van complexe maatschappelijke uitdagingen die (mede) vorm krijgen binnen sociale media en andere technologiegemedieerde omgevingen. De rol van emoties en hoe deze interageren met cognitieve processen en gedrag staat centraal, zowel op theoretisch als methodologisch niveau. Lopende projecten bestuderen 1) hoe emoties samenhangen met mediagebruik (bijv. verveling en smartphonegebruik, gewoonten en emotieregulatie gerelateerd aan smartphone(dis)connectie), 2) hoe communicatie gericht kan zijn op emoties (bijv. verhalen en emoties, online haat en pesterijen aanpakken, vaccinatie-angst aanpakken) en 3) hoe technologieën rekening kunnen houden met emoties en gedrag en dit kunnen sturen (bijv. lichaamsbeweging stimuleren door dynamische technologieën, chatbots voor slachtoffers van online seksuele intimidatie).

Prof. dr. Ann Desmet
Ann DeSmet is docent aan de vakgroep communicatiestudies van de Universiteit Antwerpen en assistant professor in gezondheidspsychologie aan de ULB. Ze behaalde een master in psychologie, een advanced master in marketing analysis en planning, en een doctoraat in de gezondheidswetenschappen. Haar onderzoek richt zich vooral op meervoudige gedragsverandering, zelfregulatie, en persuasieve, digitale technieken die het potentieel hebben om mensen te ondersteunen in gezond en prosociaal gedrag. Ze leidt het PACE (Promotion of health, prosocial behaviour, and wellbeing) onderzoekscentrum aan de ULB.

Marthe Mennes
Marthe Mennes is doctoraatsstudente aan zowel de Universiteit van Antwerpen als de Universiteit Gent, werkzaam aan zowel de Universiteit van Antwerpen als de Universiteit Gent, waar zij een actieve rol vervult in het DISCONNECT TO CONNECT-project, gericht op digitale ontkoppeling en digitaal welzijn. Marthe behaalde haar bachelorsdiploma communicatiemanagement aan de Thomas More hogeschool gevolgd door haar Masterdiploma in Communicatiewetenschappen, Strategische Communicatie aan de Universiteit van Antwerpen.
Marthe's onderzoek richt zich op digitale ontkoppeling binnen gezinnen, waarbij ze gebruikmaakt van kwalitatieve onderzoeksmethoden. Haar specifieke focus ligt op het begrijpen van de diverse manieren waarop gezinnen hun digitale en niet-digitale levens vormgeven. Dit alles gebeurt onder begeleiding van Prof. dr. Heidi Vandeboch (Department of Communication Studies, University of Antwerp, Belgium), Prof. dr. Tom De Leyn (School of Social Sciences, Hasselt University; Imec-mict-UGent, Department of Communication Sciences, Ghent University, Belgium), en Prof. dr. Marijke Verbruggen (Department of Work and Organization Studies, KU Leuven, Belgium).

Laura Lemahieu
Laura Lemahieu is een doctoraatsstudent aan de Universiteit Antwerpen. Ze is lid van de onderzoeksgroep Media & ICT in Organisaties en Samenleving (MIOS), die verbonden is aan de Afdeling Communicatiewetenschappen. In 2021 behaalde Laura haar masterdiploma in Communicatiewetenschappen aan de KU Leuven.
Haar onderzoek richt zich op de relatie tussen het gewoontematig gebruik van smartphones, digitale ontkoppeling en welzijn. Ze onderzoekt of en hoe het gewoontematige gebruik van smartphones het vermogen van individuen om hun smartphonegebruik te beperken beïnvloedt. Met behulp van kwantitatieve methoden, zoals dwarsdoorsnede-enquêtes, ervaringssteekproefmethoden en experimenten, streeft ze ernaar een interventie te ontwerpen die smartphonegebruikers helpt bij het beperken van hun ongewenste smartphonegewoonten en het verbeteren van hun (digitale) welzijn.

dr. Marijn Martens
Marijn Martens is a postdoctoral researcher at the imec research group for Media, Innovation and Communication Technologies (imec-mict-UGent). He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education: Physics – Mathematics (Artevelde University College, 2015), a master’s degree in CommunicationSciences with a specialization in New Media and Society (Ghent University, 2017), and a doctoral degree in Communication Sciences (Ghent University, 2023) about the perception and evaluation of algorithmic decision-making systems from a laypersons' perspective.
Marijn is the coordinator of the SBO project.

Prof. dr. Bram De Wever
Bram De Wever is associate professor at the Department of Educational Sciences, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Ghent University, Belgium. He is head of the TECOLAB research group. For this specific SBO proposal, Bram brings his experience with designing, implementing, and evaluating interventions in authentic educational settings to the table. His research interests include the use of technology in educational settings, in which he has been focusing on online and blended learning in secondary, higher, and adult education.

Prof. dr. Ernst Koster
Ernst Koster is full professor at the department of Experimental-Clinical and Health Psychology of Ghent University. He has been awarded a research professor position by the special research fund of Ghent University (2019-2025). He has co-founded the PANlab. This lab is internationally recognized as an expertise center for cognitive (neuro)science of affective disorders such as depression and anxiety. The research interests of Ernst Koster are cognitive vulnerability factors of depression and anxiety. Within this context has been studying effects of social media use and problematic gaming as risk factors in recent years. He has published major theoretical papers and is one of the leading researchers to investigate cognitive training in depression and anxiety.

Prof. dr. Lieven De Marez
Lieven De Marez is a professor ‘Media, Technology & Innovation’ & ‘User-centric innovation research’ at the department of communication sciences at Ghent University. At the department, he is heading the multidisciplinary research group for Media, Innovation & Communication Technologies (mict), affiliated to imec, the world-leading R&D and innovation hub in nano-electronics and digital technologies. Within imec, Lieven is the founding father of the digimeter and methodological innovator within imec’s Innovation Services Team.
Prof. dr. Tom de Leyn
Tom De Leyn is a tenure track lecturer in communication sciences at the School of Social Sciences (UHasselt) and an affiliated researcher at the research group for Media, Innovation, and Communication Technologies (imec-mict-UGent). He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology (KUL), a master's degree in anthropology (KUL), and a Ph.D. in communication sciences (UGent). Tom conducts research on digital youth cultures, digital well-being, media literacy, and privacy using qualitative methods.

Prof. dr. Elfi Baillien
Elfi Baillien is a Professor of Psychosocial and Digital Well-being at Work at the Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences of KU Leuven, within the Work and Organisation Studies research group. She earned her doctorate in Psychology at KU Leuven in 2011 and has never left her Alma Mater. Since 2014, she has been the academic director of the supplementary training for prevention advisors, specializing in psychosocial aspects of labor (Codex Well-being at Work). She is also the chair of the 'work and organization' segment of KU Leuven's Digital Society Institute (Digisoc). Her research interest focuses on the antecedents of and interventions for mental, psychosocial well-being of employees (work stress, conflicts, unwanted behavior) and the opportunities as well as challenges of increasing digitalization in our workplaces. Within this specific SBO, she brings her unique perspective from both the employee and employer sides.
Elfi leads the 'work' narrative within the SBO project and guides doctoral researchers Lore Geldof and Alice Verlinden.

Alice Verlinden
Alice Verlinden has been working as a doctoral researcher in the Work and Organizational Studies research group at KU Leuven, Faculty of Economics and Business. Since October 2022, she has also been involved in the SBO project.
Her research is situated in the field of work and organizations, focusing on the impact of ICT usage on the well-being and productivity of employees. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, she explores how individuals and organizations can regulate the use of digital technologies through disconnection, aiming to cultivate a healthy relationship with these technologies. With a background as a prevention advisor, she also has a strong interest in prevention and intervention, which is reflected in her research.
She is supervised by Prof. Dr. Elfi Baillien and Prof. Dr. Marijke Verbruggen.
Lore Geldof
Lore Geldof is a master in Environmental and Occupational Health Management. As a PhD student, her research is focused on the impact of digitalization on employees, specifically examining why individuals choose (temporarily) not to use digital media, the driving factors behind these choices, the resulting effects, and whether it contributes to their well-being. To gather insights, Lore engages in conversations with a diverse group of employees, gaining an in-depth understanding of their lives and perspectives. While Lore primarily focuses on employees, she also shows an interest in the work-life balance, leading her to interact with young individuals who provide additional perspectives on digitalization.

Prof. dr. Heidi Vandebosch
is a professor at the Department of Communication Sciences of the University of Antwerp. She primarily conducts research on cyberbullying and other forms of online aggression (such as hate speech, sexual misconduct). Additionally, she studies how communication technologies can be used in addressing cyberbullying and in health interventions. Heidi Vandebosch is involved as a co-promoter in the SBO project, drawing on her expertise regarding the impact of digital media on social relationships and (physical and mental) health.
Prof. dr. Karolien Poels
Karolien Poels is a full professor at the department of Communication Studies at the University of Antwerp. Her research focuses on the strategic communication of complex societal challenges that are (partly) shaped within social media and other technology mediated environments. The role of emotions and how they interact with cognitive processes and behavior is central, both at the theoretical and methodological level. Ongoing projects study 1) how emotions relate to media use (e.g., boredom and smartphone use, habits and emotion regulation related to smartphone (dis)connection), 2) how communication can target emotions (e.g. narratives and emotions, addressing online hate and harassment, tackling vaccine hesitancy) and 3) how technologies can take into account and steer emotions and behavior (e.g., promoting physical activity through dynamic technologies, chatbots for victims of online sexual harassment).

Prof. dr. Ann Desmet
Ann DeSmet is a lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Antwerp and an assistant professor in health psychology at the ULB. She obtained a master's degree in psychology, an advanced master in marketing analysis and planning, and a doctorate in health sciences. Her research primarily focuses on multiple behavior change, self-regulation, and persuasive digital techniques that have the potential to support people in healthy and prosocial behavior. Marthe Mennes
Marthe Mennes is a doctoral student at both the University of Antwerp and Ghent University, working at both universities, where she plays an active role in the DISCONNECT TO CONNECT project, focusing on digital disconnection and digital well-being. Marthe obtained her bachelor's degree in communication management at the Thomas More College of Higher Education followed by her Master's degree in Communication Sciences, Strategic Communication at the University of Antwerp.
Marthe's research focuses on digital disconnection within families, utilizing qualitative research methods. Her specific focus is on understanding the various ways in which families shape their digital and non-digital lives. All this is done under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Heidi Vandeboch (Department of Communication Studies, University of Antwerp, Belgium), Prof. Dr. Tom De Leyn (School of Social Sciences, Hasselt University; Imec-mict-UGent, Department of Communication Sciences, Ghent University, Belgium), and Prof. Dr. Marijke Verbruggen (Department of Work and Organization Studies, KU Leuven, Belgium).

Laura Lemahieu
Laura Lemahieu is a PhD Student at the University of Antwerp. She is a member of the research group Media & ICT in Organisations and Society (MIOS), which is affiliated with the Department of Communication Studies. In 2021, Laura obtained her master’s degree in Communication Sciences at the KU Leuven.
Her research focuses on the relationship between habitual smartphone usage, digital disconnection, and wellbeing. She examines whether and how habitual smartphone usage affects individuals’ ability to limit their smartphone use. Employing quantitative methods, such as cross-sectional surveys, experience sampling methods, and experiments, she strives to design an intervention that assists smartphone users in curbing their undesired smartphone habits and enhancing their (digital) well-being.
In het SBO-project she is supervised by Prof. dr. Karolien Poels and Prof. dr. Mariek Van den Abeele.
